JEDI’s latest offering Robber Baron

JEDI: Robber Baron

Making the transition from DJ to Producer. Toronto’s own JEDI makes tracks.

Who is JEDI?

Newmarket favorite son Jed Harper aka JEDI actually started his career in music as a Hip Hop DJ. As with many aspiring artists, JEDI decided he wanted to develop his DJ career, by taking the next natural step, and move to the epicenter of Canada s nightlife community; Toronto. The move to a 4 million strong, multicultural city fueled his obsessed with experimentation and it wasn’t long before JEDI began fusing all genres of music from across the spectrum into his sets.

It wasn’t long before some friends at CKLN Radio helped him land his first major residency at Vince Carter’s INSIDE nightclub. Since then, JEDI has held the title of main resident at a majority of Toronto s leading nightclubs, including Guvernment, CiRCA, This Is London, and a multitude of high-end King Street venues. Along the way, JEDI has had an opportunity to perform with Kanye West, as well as perform for Sean Comb’s (P-Diddy), Nelly Furtado, and Justin Timberlake.

Robber Baron, Bad Concept Records

With all the success on stage there is only one natural progression left for JEDI and that’s production and with that is his latest offering out now on the Bad Concept label, ‘Robber Baron‘. This solid package has a little of something for everyone: The Original Mix is an Electro infused Techno track that just thumps its way out the box! Rising horns and zipping FX included, this is what I’d personally label in my set as one “big fat banger”. The flip-side offers a more tribalism tech-hungry tip, with cowbells to boot, from the talented Mikel Curcio of Canada. This mix is sure to stay in my live sets for a long time to come with plenty of headroom for those DJ’s like myself who like to run live remixes and edits on the fly.

However, if beats and breaks are more your thang, then there’s a full-on wobble-tastic mix by XI on a Dubstep tip, and even a deep Drum & Bass mix by Gremlinz & Rene Lavice offering some classic Amen Break jungle beats with tearing FX that’ll haunt any dancefloor. Proper festival music, and just in time for the summer! The final mix in the package comes from Marcus Visionary, in the shape of a big Electro House number, and although perhaps not the sound I personally play out myself, it still has all the makings of a floor-filler.

My favourite mix has to be the Mikel Curcio Dub Mix, with those hypnotic beats and gentle dark horses of kicks, this one is sure to brew a mighty storm in clubs worldwide.
